چکیده

We selected a sample of 33 Gamma–Ray Bursts (GRBs) detected by Swift, with known redshift and optical extinction at the host frame. For these, we constructed the de–absorbed and K–corrected X–ray and optical rest frame light curves. These are modelled as the sum of two components: emission from the forward shock due to the interaction of a fireball with the circum–burst medium and an additional component, treated in a completely phenomenological way. The latter can be identified, among other possibilities, as “late prompt” emission produced by a long lived central engine with mechanisms similar to those responsible for the production of the “standard” early prompt radiation. Apart from flares or re–brightenings, that we do not model, we find a good agreement with the data, despite of their complexity and diversity. Although based in part on a phenomenological model with a relatively large number of free parameters, we believe that our findings are a first step towards the construction of a more physical scenario. Our approach allows us to interpret the behaviour of the optical and X–ray afterglows in a coherent way, by a relatively simple scenario. Within this context it is possible to explain why sometimes no jet break is observed; why, even if a jet break is observed, it is often chromatic; why the steepening after the jet break time is often shallower than predicted. Finally, the decay slope of the late prompt emission after the shallow phase is found to be remarkably similar to the time profile expected by the accretion rate of fall–back material (i.e. ∝ t), suggesting that this can be the reason why the central engine can be active for a long time.

Snapshot Identification of Gamma Ray Burst Optical Afterglows

Gamma ray burst afterglows can be identified in single epoch observations using three or more optical filters. This method relies on color measurements to distinguish the power law spectrum of an afterglow from the curved spectra of stars. Observations in a fourth filter will further distinguish between afterglows and most galaxies up to redshifts z ≈ 1. By allowing faster identification of opt...

Testing an unifying view of Gamma Ray Burst afterglows

Four years after the launch the Swift satellite the nature of the Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) broadband afterglow behaviour is still an open issue ad the standard external shock fireball models cannot easily explain the puzzling combined temporal and spectral optical to X–ray behaviour of a large number of afterglows. We analysed the rest frame de–absorbed and K– corrected optical and X–ray multi–w...

Gamma - ray bursts as X - ray depth - gauges of the Universe

We discuss the X-ray flux of gamma-ray burst afterglows at redshifts in the range 3-30, including the effects of the intergalactic He II absorption. We point out that strong X-ray lines may form locally in burst afterglows starting minutes after the trigger. This can provide distinctive X-ray distance indicators out to the redshifts where the first generation of massive stars form.

A systematic analysis of X-ray afterglows of gamma-ray burst observed by XMM-Newton

This work is part of a systematic re-analysis program of all the data of GammaRay Burst (GRB) X-ray afterglows observed so far, in order to constrain the GRB models. We present here a systematic analysis of those afterglows observed by XMMNewton between January 2000 and March 2004. This dataset includes GRB 011211 and GRB 030329. We have obtained spectra, light curves and colors for these after...

Gamma Ray burst afterglows in the infrared: a standard candle?

Context. Clustering in the luminosity of the afterglows of gamma-ray burst has been reported in the optical and X-ray. Aims. We investigate the possibility that a clustering in the luminosity of the afterglows of gamma-ray burst exists in near infrared (J, H, K bands). We use observations of events occurring from 1997 to the end of 2007. Methods. We correct the gamma-ray burst afterglow light c...
